Care workers are often first in recognising and responding to hate crime when someone is being targeted just because of who they are. Hate crime can damage a person\u2019s physical health, confidence, independence and willingness to access services. Understanding hate crime in health and social care is an important part of safeguarding and delivering compassionate, person-centred support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A hate crime is a criminal offence that is perceived by the victim (or another person) to be motivated by prejudice. Hate crime is recorded across five monitored characteristics: race, religion or belief, disability, sexual orientation and transgender identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A hate incident is slightly different in that it too is motivated by hostility or prejudice but is not a criminal offence. Care workers still need to take hate incidents seriously; repeated behaviour could escalate and cause lasting emotional or physical harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not everyone will describe their experience as hate crime. Fear of retaliation, communication barriers, embarrassment, dependence on the perpetrator or earlier bad experiences might prevent someone from feeling they can report what has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When recognising hate crime,<\/strong> care workers should be professionally curious. Possible indicators include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n A single indicator could have many explanations. Care workers should not investigate on their own, nor should they confront a suspected perpetrator. Instead, they should look out for patterns, ask sensitive open questions and consider if the person might need an interpreter, advocate or other type of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When someone discloses hate crime, listen, do not interrupt or question their account. Thank them for speaking up, acknowledge the impact of the experience and reassure them that the behaviour is not their fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Check if the person is in immediate danger. Emergency services should always be contacted if there is an urgent risk of harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Confidentiality should be explained honestly; information might need to be shared to protect the individual or another person. Wherever possible, involve the person in any decisions, respect their wishes, communication needs and preferred support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Accurate record-keeping is crucial when recognising and responding to hate crime.
