Autism and Asperger's Syndrome Awareness - Section 1

This course will provide the learner with an understanding of Autism and Asperger's syndrome. It covers the key requirements for the care of people with autism, regardless of the health workers' role. The history of Autistic Spectrum Disorders is included. This is to help underpin your learning about how best to support people with these conditions, what you will need to consider, and the sort of interventions you may need to make.

The learning objectives are:

- To develop a more detailed understanding of autism by exploring the history of Autism Spectrum Disorders
- To reflect on current theory and improve your knowledge
- To understand the role of diagnosis, given the traits of Autism
-To understand the behaviours exhibited by some individuals with an autistic disorder
- To learn what challenging behaviour may mean for the family
-To understand how best to support and apply interventions and treatment
- To understand how to promote good practice in the support of individuals with autistic spectrum conditions
- To evaluate working practices and strategies in order to recommend changes

This course is comprised of two key modules, with reflection exercises, short case studies and an assessment at the end of each module.

Autism and Asperger's Syndrome Awareness - Section 2

This module is designed to give you a good general understanding of Asperger’s Syndrome.

Doctors no longer diagnose people with Asperger's Syndrome, instead preferring to use the more inclusive term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, it is important that you understand Asperger's, or "high-functioning" autism, as people who were previously diagnosed with this form of autism retain this diagnosis.

After this module, you will:

- Understand the key characteristics of Asperger’s Syndrome (or "high-functioning" autism)
- Learn about disorders associated with this form of autism
- Understand the Triad of Impairment
- Understand some key theories and research developed by Simon Baron-Cohen
- Learn techniques to support sensory, perception and anxiety issues
- Practice applying understanding to exercises

- Be able to explore further resources to enhance your knowledge and understanding
